Class Structure
Inosanto Blended Martial Arts combines Filipino Martial Arts, Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, Silat, and Wing Chun into a single program. The classes consist of 55 minutes of drills and theory in those arts. When space and time allow, students may participate in structured sparring after we bow out of class.
Inosanto Blended Martial Arts
The Inosanto Blended Martial Arts (IBMA) program is a combination of Filipino Kali, Maphilindo Silat, Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, and Wing Chun from the lens of Guro Dan Inosanto. The curriculum represents a small but highly effective portion of the deep well of Guro Inosanto’s years of experience teaching and training.
The goal of this program is for students to develop a functional fighting ability; and to be capable of surviving a violent encounter regardless of the environment, the number of attackers, or the weapons that are deployed against them. This is very similar to the objectives of the Self Defense program, but with a primary and specific focus on deadly-force encounters involving weapons.
We consider ourselves fortunate to be instructors within the International Inosanto Martial Arts Instructors Association (IIMAIA), and have an additional goal in this program of elevating students to a knowledge and skill level that would enable us to feel confident when sponsoring their application to join the IIMAIA and become Instructors under Guro Dan Inosanto directly!
Below, you will find a brief description of the four foundational arts of the IBMA curriculum:
Filipino Martial Arts is a highly sophisticated and comprehensive weapon based martial art from the Philippines but is ultimately an empty hand system. Developed for “mass attack” as well as single opponent confrontations, training heightens student’s awareness of their surroundings and teaches them to use their environment as tools of combat. Everyday objects, such as umbrellas, books, bandannas, etc., become effective means of self-defense in the hands of a properly trained individual.
Maphilindo Silat is what we call a battlefield art. It is designed to engage and eliminate opponents aggressively and quickly, while maintaining the mobility and fluid movement necessary to move effectively from one opponent to the next on a battlefield. Maphilindo Silat is the compilation of all of the various systems of Silat that Guro Dan Inosanto studied under masters from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. He created this expression of the art to honor the innovations and unique strengths and insights of each of his instructors. Silat is a comprehensive martial art that can be traced all the way back to Alexander the Great.
The martial legacy of Bruce Lee and Jeet Kune Do taught at Ethos Combatives emphasizes the innovative teaching and training methods developed by Bruce Lee, as preserved and taught by his protégé, student and training partner, Dan Inosanto. Students can enhance their natural attributes, such as coordination, timing, speed, endurance, strength and agility, taught within the philosophical framework of Jeet Kune Do.
The Wing Chun offered at Ethos Combatives is the product of a blended lineage. Sifu Nathan and Sifu Adrian were taught Wing Chun by Sifu Johnny Beheler, who’s two primary instructors were Sigung Bill Wong of the Yip Man / Moy Yat lineage and Sigung Francis Fong of the Jiu Wan lineage. Finally, as instructors within the Inosanto Association we view Wing Chun through Guro Inosanto’s training with Bruce Lee.
